Hercolaneum is famous in the world for the archeological excavations of the roman city, founded, according to the legend, by Hercules. Situated on a vulcanic plain, overlooking the sea, Hercolanum, like the other vesuvian cities of Pompei, Oplontis and Stabia was covered by lava after the explosion of Vesuvius in 79 a.C. it was buried under 23 m of mud, lapillus and hash.The city came to life during the Borbonis times.
